Composition and Visual Hierarchy

Learn to organize visual elements to guide the viewer's eye and create meaning.

25 min

Composition in 2D Design

Elements of Art:

  • • Line: Direction, weight, quality (contour, gestural, implied)

  • • Shape/Form: Geometric vs. organic; positive vs. negative space

  • • Color: Hue, value, saturation; color theory (complementary, analogous, triadic)

  • • Texture: Actual vs. implied

  • • Space: Depth through overlap, size variation, atmospheric perspective

  • • Value: Light to dark range; creates volume and mood
  • Principles of Design:

  • • Balance: Symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial

  • • Emphasis: Focal point — where the eye goes first

  • • Contrast: Differences that create visual interest

  • • Unity/Harmony: Elements working together cohesively

  • • Movement/Rhythm: Visual pathways guiding the eye

  • • Proportion/Scale: Size relationships between elements
  • Building Your Sustained Investigation:

  • Start with a question or idea that genuinely interests you

  • Experiment with multiple approaches and materials

  • Document your process — failures are as important as successes

  • Let each piece inform the next — show growth and evolution

  • Write reflectively about your artistic decisions
  • Exam Format: Portfolio submission: 15 Sustained Investigation images + writing, 5 Selected Works.

UC Section: F — Visual & Performing Arts

    Grade Level: 10-12

Hello Student. I'm your 2D Art and Design SofAI Coach.

Right now we're working on "Composition and Visual Hierarchy".

    I can help you:
  • • Scaffold the lesson without losing AP rigor

  • • Run an original AP-style concept check

  • • Build a visual model, table, timeline, graph, passage map, or portfolio critique

  • • Coach an FRQ / performance task / portfolio artifact

  • • Turn today's work into Score 5 evidence

  • Score 5 moves for this course:
  • • Make the investigation visible.

  • • Document revision decisions.

  • • Write about materials and choices with specificity.

  • What should we tackle first?
