Exam Blueprint

Four Equal Sections · 25% Each

Every section of the AP Japanese exam carries equal weight. Master all four to score a 5.

👂

Listening

聴解 (Chōkai)
25%40 min~30 questions
  • › Recorded conversations, presentations, broadcasts in Japanese
  • › Questions about main idea, details, tone, and implied meaning
  • › All 6 AP themes represented in audio content

Score 5 Tip: Train with Comprehensible Japanese on YouTube — graded content from beginner to native speed. Work up to the 'Upper Intermediate' playlist before the exam.

📖

Reading

読解 (Dokkai)
25%60 min~35 questions
  • › Authentic Japanese texts: emails, news articles, schedules, ads, infographics
  • › Some questions pair two related texts (比較読み)
  • › Mixed script: hiragana, katakana, and kanji (you'll see ~600 kanji on the exam)

Score 5 Tip: Read NHK Web Easy (やさしい日本語) daily — real news simplified for learners. Then push to full NHK articles. Time yourself: ~100 sec per question at score-5 pace.

✍️

Writing

書き方 (Kakikata)
25%30 min2 FRQs
  • › Story Narration (15 min): write a narrative using 4 pictures
  • › Email Response (15 min): write a formal reply addressing ALL points

Score 5 Tip: For Story Narration, always include: time markers (まず/次に/最後に), at least one piece of dialogue in quotes (「…」と言いました), characters' emotions (~は驚きました), and a resolution (結局/~になりました).

🗣

Speaking

話す力 (Hanasu Chikara)
25%~10 min2 FRQs
  • › Simulated Conversation (模擬会話): 6 prompts × 20 sec
  • › Cultural Presentation (文化発表): 4 min prep + 2 min speaking

Score 5 Tip: For the Cultural Presentation, always compare — don't just describe Japanese culture. Say: 日本では~ですが、私のコミュニティでは~です。(In Japan it's X, but in my community it's Y.) This is the structure that earns 5s.
